Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer and heifer calves weighing under 500 lbs were not tested on a very light offering, 500-600 lb steers sold steady to firm, with 600-700 lbs steers trading 3.00-5.00 higher, spots 7.00 higher, 700-750 lbs sold steady to 2.00 lower and yearling steers weighing 750-800 lbs sold with a lower undertone on few comparisons. Feeder heifers weighing 500-600 lbs sold 4.00-6.00 higher, with 600-650 lbs trading steady to 3.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold with a lower undertone on a light test. Demand was good on a good offering of top quality calves and yearlings weighing 500-750 lbs with several part loads and pot loads in the offering and selling with overall good weighing conditions. Slaughter cows on a light test sold 2.00-4.00 lower than two weeks ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
