Compared to last week, 550-650 lb steers sold steady to firm, with 650-750 lbs trading steady to 3.00 higher over 750 lbs were not well tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-550 lbs sold steady on a light test, with 600-650 lbs trading steady to firm and a pot load of 675 lb heifers trading with a higher undertone with good weighing conditions. Demand was good on a moderate supply with a good quality offering of steers weighing 550-750 lbs and heifers weighing 600-700 lbs. Slaughter cows sold with a sharply higher undertone on a scarce offering from last week. CME feeder cattle contracts closed with triple-digit gains on Tuesday finding support from the cash cattle market.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
