Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Trade activity and demand moderate. Livestock Exchange hosted the 2nd of 3 stock show specials with the run comprising of calves weaned as far back as September. Steers and heifers were home raised, pre-conditioned on vaccination programs with up to 3 rounds. Feeder steers under 550 lbs traded mostly 2.00 to 6.00 lower, 550-700 lbs mostly 6.00 to 8.00 lower, and over 700 lbs mostly 1.00 to 5.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 550 lbs traded 1.00 to 8.00 higher, 550-650 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 lower, and over 650 lbs 1.00 to 2.00 higher. The next available report will be Friday, January 22, 2021.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
