Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, with high-quality feeder offerings noted, feeder steers weighing up to 500 lbs. unevenly steady and those weighing over 500 lbs. 7.00 higher. Feeder heifers measuring 3.00 higher overall with feeder bulls 6.00 higher with exception of 6-weights sharply higher. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher overall with slaughter bulls 3.00 higher. Today's sale included the annual Customer Appreciation Event with free meal for customers and multiple vendors set up with free giveaways and a drawing for door prizes. Today's offerings included the following load lots: 1 load ML 1 preconditioned Heifers, 570 lbs., $272.50 per cwt., medium flesh, appx. 70 percent black with 30 percent Continental; 1 load ML 1 preconditioned Steers, 827 lbs., $244.75 per cwt., medium flesh, black and Contintental mix.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
