Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week feeder steers 550 to 600 lbs. were 11.00 higher, 650 to 700 lbs. were 17.00 higher, 700 to 750 lbs. were 12.00 higher and 800 to 850 lbs. were 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers did not have the numbers for a comparison but all weights were higher than last week. Buyers were aggressive in filling orders and new buyers in attendance this week. Flesh condition was light to moderate plus with the majority of this weeks offering weaned and with at least two rounds of shots. This week there is to be below zero temps with 30 to 40 below wind chills through the next week or so. There were concerns about trucks getting out of state with cattle with the blizzard and road conditions south and east of the state.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
