Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week steers traded mixed with 500 to 600 lbs steers 3.00 to 8.00 lower and 600 to 650 lbs. were 10.00 higher. The only weights of heifers for comparison were the 500 to 550 lbs. which were 11.00 lower. There are less and less yearlings in the offering as the fall progresses. There were many nice strings of spring calves in todays offering. Most are not weaned and lacking shots. Those with shots and weaned are what the buyers are paying a premium for. Good buyer demand this week with new buyers in attendance. Most calves in light to moderate flesh condition.
