Compared to last weeks report feeder steers 400 to 450 lbs. were 14.00 higher, 450 to 550 lbs. were 1.00 to 3.00 higher, 550 to 600 lbs. were 10.00 higher and 600 to 650 lbs. were 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers 400 to 450 lbs. were 7.00 higher, 450 to 500 lbs. were 2.00 higher and 500 to 600 lbs. were 5.00 to 6.00 higher. Buyers were bidding higher to get the feeders they need to fill orders. Seeing more weaned calves this week along with two rounds of shots and buyers are paying a premium for these feeders. Many nice strings of of calves this week with several load lots of steers and heifers in the offering. Most feeders were in light to moderate flesh condition.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
