Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week there only a couple hundred yearlings in todays offering. In comparing feeder steers from last week the 500 to 550 lbs. were 4.00 lower and the 550 to 600 lbs. were 11.00 higher. Feeder heifers 450 to 500 lbs. were 5.00 higher and 500 to 600 lbs. were steady to 6.00 higher this week. Good demand for todays offering of light weight steers and heifers. Most feeders were in light to medium flesh condition. A few load lots of spring calves in todays offering. Buyers still paying a premium for calves with two series of shots. Larger numbers of spring calves expected next week.
