Compared to last week, steers sold 6.00-15.00 lower with those under 750 lbs seeing the full extent of the losses and heifers sold steady to 5.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good for a moderate supply made up mostly of loads of yearlings but also some consignments of mostly long weaned home raised cattle. The market has taken a slight downturn the past week or so with fed cattle trading mostly 7.00 lower last week, resulting in losses on the board as well, including Tuesday. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 higher but some high dressing cows sold 5.00-8.00 higher, bulls sold with a higher undertone.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
