Compared to last week, a light test of 400-500 lb steer calves sold with a firm to higher undertone, 500-600 lb steers sold 10.00-15.00 higher, with 600-650 lb steers trading 5.00-10.00 higher, 650-700 lbs were lightly tested, with 700-750 lbs selling firm to 7.00 higher with a consignment of 755 lb steers selling with a firm undertone and two pot loads of 803-839 lb yearling steers trading 9.00-11.00 higher than last weeks pot loads of similar weights. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs and 600-700 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher with 500-600 lbs trading fully steady to firm with 8 pot loads of 702-747 lb heifers selling 2.00-10.00 higher than last weeks pot loads. Demand was very good on a moderate supply with nice overall good quality offering of steer and heifer calves weighing 400-650 lbs all selling on and active market along with the pot loads of yearling steers and heifers. Several stick out sales of the pot loads included two pot loads of 803 and 839 lb steers selling at 263.00-263.75, 142 head of 702 lb heifers sold at 264.25 and pot load weighing 718 lbs at 260.00. CME Cattle futures had a strong start to begin the week after last Friday's COF report was positive with August closing 4.37 higher and September thru November all closing 3.42 to 3.95 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
