Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves under 700 lbs sold 5.00-15.00 higher and heavier weight calves and yearlings sold 5.00-8.00 higher. Heifers sold 5.00-10.00 higher. Demand was good to very good for a heavy supply. Some of the nicest weather since before the holiday break allowed for the large run and buyers are better positioned to receive cattle this week as well. The quality and condition of the cattle was excellent. The board has moved mostly higher the last couple weeks and the semi-annual cattle inventory report to come out this week is anticipated to be bullish. Slaughter cows and bulls were not reported this week due to the large run of feeders.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
