Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last Monday, the feeder market displayed mixed movement across classes. Feeder steers below 350 lbs traded stronger on a light test, above 350 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower with a good supply and solid demand. Feeder heifers below 600 lbs were sharply higher with strong demand and a good offering while heifers above 600 lbs were mostly steady on a light test. Buyers were active and paid premiums for high-quality, well-conditioned cattle while heavy-conditioned and off-colored calves were discounted heavily, reflecting selective buyer interest. Slaughter cows sold 3.00 to 5.00 lower with a moderate supply. Slaughter bulls were steady with good demand.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
