Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold 5.00 to 10.00 lower while steer and heifers calves were 10.00 to 15.00 lower. Demand was good. Breaking and Boning slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 higher, while Lean cows and Bulls sold 6.00 to 8.00 higher. Compared to last week, trading of Kansas negotiated fed cattle sold 2.00 lower at 246.00. In the hay market, This past week, demand held steady while movement ranged from slow to moderate. Ongoing drought concerns and declining alfalfa conditions have many producers holding onto inventory rather than selling. Many are watching the forecast and anticipating storms that could bring much-needed relief.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
