Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, steers sold 4.00 to 7.00 higher Heifers under 600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher while those over 600 lbs sold steady to 4.00 lower. Slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 4.00 higher. Kansas negotiated fed cattle sales experienced a new record high and sold mostly 3.00 higher from 248.00 to 249.00, mostly 248.00. In the hay market, Much of the state experienced warmer temperatures and increased sunshine last week, providing a welcome improvement in conditions. Interest in hay varied across regions, with some areas reporting increased inquiries, though no notable changes in pricing or movement were observed. However, some parts of the state have seen an increase in grass hay movement, as many producers burned through supplies during the recent cold snap.
