Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week, steers under 700 lbs and heifers under 600 lbs sold 10.00 to 16.00 higher. Steers over 700 lbs were 2.00 to 6.00 higher while heifers over 600 sold steady to 5.00 higher. Demand was good to very good. Slaughter cows and bulls sold 3.00 to 6.00 higher. The cattle inventory report was released Friday with the beef cow herd 1 pct less than a year ago. Last week's negotiated cash fed cattle in Kansas sold 6.00 to 7.00 higher at 208.00, with a few purchases up to 209.00. In the hay market this past week, demand remains light, however, trades picked up a bit for the southwest and south-central regions. Prices remained steady with plenty of hay still available. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor for the week of January 21st, Some of the coldest air of the year settled into the region over the last week. Departures from normal temperatures were 12-15 degrees below normal in portions of Wyoming, South Dakota, and Colorado, and into Kansas and Nebraska. Dry conditions dominated the region with only portions of southwest Kansas and the Plains of Wyoming and Colorado recording precipitation.
