Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers under 500 lbs sold 10.00 to 15.00 higher while those over 500 lbs sold 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Heifers sold 3.00 to 7.00 higher. More unweaned calves in the offering this week as producers are opting to wean on the trailer as drought is back on everyone's mind. Demand was moderate to good. Slaughter Cows sold 6.00 to 8.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold unevenly steady on limited comparison. In the feedlot trade, negotiated sales sold mostly steady at 190.00. In the hay market, demand remained light, while trades bumped up a bit. Prices were mostly steady but remained soft, with dairy hay price falling in a few areas. Drought continues to be the hot topic of discussion, but even though 98% of the state is experiencing drought, hay is still not moving. Producers have been harvesting milo and scratching in wheat, and although the wheat is coming up in most areas, it will need some rain soon to keep it from going backwards.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
