Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the

Compared to last week, steers under 850 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher, while those over 850 sold 4.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifers sold 3.00 to 9.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good. Boning and Lean slaughter cows sold 6.00 to 9.00 higher. Breaker cows not well tested. Slaughter bulls sold steady. This past week, negotiated live sales in Kansas sold steady to 1.00 higher at 186.00 to 187.00. In the hay market, This past week, demand remained light, and prices were mostly steady. The hay market remains sluggish, as one producer put it, " there is too much feed and too few cattle". Silage and high moisture corn remain the greatest threat to the hay producer with 1,000's of acres put up and low corn price. Producers remain busy in the fields finishing up corn harvest, planting wheat and starting on beans.
