Compared to last week, under 800 lbs steers and heifers sold steady to 7.00 higher; over 800 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold 5.00 to 7..00 lower while slaughter bulls sold 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Feedlot cattle trade in Kansas was mostly steady to 1.00 lower at 187.00 to 188.00. Demand was moderate to good. In the hay market, demand is still light for all hay offerings, however more tons were moved. Demand is still very light for all hay offerings. Hay prices, across the board, continue to weaken as new hay hits the ground. Feedyards do not seem to be buying much with lower cattle numbers and an abundance of other feed options out there along with the availability of 2023 carry over hay. Second cut alfalfa is being finished up and producers are starting on 3rd. Yields have had mixed results. First cutting for many areas was light with second being better.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
