Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, Feeder Steer and Heifer calves under 600 lbs sold 10.00 to 15.00 lower, 700 to 850 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower, and above 850 lbs sold 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Slaughter Cows and Bulls sold 3.00 to 9.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good. In the hay market, demand remains low to moderate for all hay and prices are soft for all regions. There still seems to be no interest in buying and no new crop pricing has been reported as folks are trying to get rid of or use up their old crop before committing to new crop. Many areas are reporting they could use a rain, with warm and windy conditions exacerbating the situation. Contributors state that the wheat is doing o.k. but will go backwards, in a hurry, without moisture. Alfalfa producers are spraying for weevil, as the wind allows, and some have begun irrigating.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
