Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold 2.00 to 8.00 higher. Slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 3.00 lower. Demand was reported throughout the state as moderate to good. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feed yards sold 3.00 to 4.00 higher from 178.00 to 179.00, mostly at 175.00. In the hay market, demand remains low, and alfalfa prices are headed downward . . . in a hurry, especially in the southwest and south-central regions. Late last fall and early winter, producers figured prices would go back up after the first of the year, but we have not seen that happen, the opposite has occurred. Pellet mills, Feed Yards and Grinders are still not in a buying mood and will be looking for rock bottom prices on alfalfa when they decide to buy. With the hay they have on hand and all the other feeds stuffs out there, most buyers indicate that they are bought up till nearly new crop.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
