Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers overall sold steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs sold 1.00 to 3.00 higher; over 700 lbs 6.00 to 8.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold uneven; breakers and boners 5.00 to 7.00 lower, leans 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls overall sold 10.00 to 11.00 lower. Demand was reported throughout the state as moderate to good. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feed yards sold 3.00 higher at 183.00. In the hay market, demand increased but trade activity remained slow, prices were mixed with grinding alfalfa continuing to fall in most regions and grass hay bumping up a bit. Producers report they have had a lot of inquiries into sudan and soybean bale price. Unfortunately, there were a lot of "Asks" and "Offers" but no true trades to report. Feed Yards are beginning to see some relief in their ground and delivered pricing as cattle prices remain high.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
