Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, steers sold 6.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifers under 600 lbs sold 9.00 to 15.00 higher; Over 600 lbs steady to 3.00 higher. Slaughter cows and bulls sold 3.00 to 6.00 higher. Demand was reported as moderate to good. Out front Feeder Cattle futures have gained 11.00 to 13.00 in the past two weeks. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feed yards sold steady at 170.00. In the hay market: Compared to the last report demand remains good, prices remained mostly steady, trade activity remains slow. Many areas received rain last week!! Producers report that the alfalfa is short but at least with the precipitation it is greening up and growing. New crop price remains elusive, but folks seem now to be mulling it over.
