Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers overall sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower, with the exception of 500 to 600 lbs selling 5.00 to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs sold on a light test with a higher undertone; over 600 lbs sold steady to 1.00 lower. Slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 2.00 lower. Demand was reported as moderate to good throughout the state. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feed yards sold 1.00 lower at 164.00. In the hay market, demand remains good, prices remained steady, trade activity was slow. Contributors report that new hay sales continue to be slow as there is not much out there to buy, however, if you beat the bushes, you might be able to find a few loads here and there.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
