Compared to last week, feeder steers under 500 lbs sold 3.00 to 4.00 lower; 500 to 600 lbs no comparison; over 600 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs sold on a light test due to light receipts this week, however a weak undertone was noted; 700 to 800 lbs 9.00 to 10.00 higher; 800 to 900 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher; over 900 lbs 12.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold uneven; breakers sold 4.00 to 5.00 lower, boners and leans sold steady to 1.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 3.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feedyards sold 3.00 higher at 137.00. Compared to the last report, dairy hay bumped up .05/point rfv while all other alfalfa and grass hay stayed steady. Interest and demand seem to be good, but hesitancy remains on making long term contracts, due to the drought. Extremely hot and dry weather returned to the plains this past week adding to concerns of shorter hay supplies, both in the bunk and in the pasture.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
