Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, feeder steers weighing less than 700 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher, while those weighing more than 700 lbs sold 2.00 to 6.00 lower. Feeder heifers overall sold 1.00 to 3.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold 4.00 to 6.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold 4.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good. Compared to last week, fed laughter steers and heifers in the feedyards sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower at 140.00. Compared to the last report, hay market prices remained steady for alfalfa and grass hay; movement remains slow although producers stated that they had received more inquiries from people wanting to buy and to sell.
