**CLOSE** Compared to last week feeder steer calves sold 7.00-14.00 lower. Yearling steers over 725 lbs. sold steady to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifer calves sold 2.00-4.00 lower. Yearling heifers over 700 lbs. sold steady to 10.00 higher. The bulk of the offering consisted of yearling type cattle with calves only lightly tested, which contributed to the lower trade. Supply was heavy with good demand. With a heat wave coming and a large run expected, Joplin Regional Stockyards made an unprecedented decision to move their sale time to midnight in an effort to keep both the cattle and the cowboys safe in extreme conditions. A larger crowd than one might have expected was on hand through the early morning hours as load after load made their way through the ring before daylight. The largest draft of the day was 718 head of steers weighing 891 lbs. that went across the scales at 261.50.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
