Market comments — USDA reporter

***Close*** Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, feeder steers under 600 lbs. sold 2.00-5.00 higher, over 600 lbs. steady to 5.00 lower. Feeder heifers sold 3.00-5.00 lower, except those under 500 lbs. which sold steady to 4.00 higher. The supply of feeders was heavy with several load lots of heavier weight yearlings in the offering. Demand was moderate to good especially for thin fleshed pee wee calves. Conditions in the country are getting muddy as snow and ice melts following some winter weather over the last few day. The market remained strong all day despite everyone in attendance watching futures drop all day. Nearby live cattle contracts closed 2.72 to 3.00 lower, and feeders closed 4.00-4.20 lower

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
