Market comments — USDA reporter

Based on limited comparisons with last week, feeder steers under 500 lbs steady, 500-600 lbs 3.00-5.00 lower, and over 600 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Feeder heifers 1.00-4.00 higher. Slaughter cows 5.00-6.00 higher. Demand moderate to good. Supply moderate. Friday's Cattle on Feed report contained a bearish placement reading of 106, most of which came from early movement of drought stricken cattle weighing 700 lbs and down. The slaughter volume continues to improve at a painfully slow pace with last weeks total missing the mark by about 25.000 head.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
