Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the sale two weeks ago, feeder steers under 575 lbs steady to 4.00 lower, over 575 lbs steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs 5.00-8.00 higher, over 600 lbs 3.00-5.00 higher. Slaughter cows 1,00-2.00 higher. Demand good to very good. Supply moderate. Several good yearling cattle in the mix this week. Cattle futures had a solid day Tuesday with most contracts around 1.00/cwt higher. Noticeable discounts were seen on a few consignments of heavier haired mid weight steers. A special cow sale following the feeders was highlighted by some high quality 4-6 year old Red Angus cows.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
