Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to two weeks ago, feeder steers and heifers sold sharply lower on the day. Some comparable weights 20.00 lower. Demand was mostly moderate. A lot of negative news in the cattle sector the last two weeks adding downward pressure to Wednesday market. The auctioneer chant a tick slower as they had to break the bids down to 1.00 and a lot of bids came in at .50 instead of the 2.50 to 5.00 bids a few weeks ago. Also, the feedlots traded live slaughter steers and heifers 7.00 to 8.00 lower at 218.00 and dressed sales sold 10.00 to 11.00 lower at mostly 345.00. With the feedlots trading in the red, most prospective buyers backed up their live auction bids.
