Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 650 to 699 lbs and 800 to 949 lbs 2.00 to 8.00 lower, 700 to 799 lbs and 950 to 999 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 lower. Heifers 550 to 599 lbs mostly steady, 600 to 749 lbs 15.00 to 20.00 lower. A very large offering of feeder cattle today met with moderate to good demand. Many loads, packages, and multiple loads of cattle, both home raised and backgrounded, most average to attractive in quality. Cattle which carried light to moderate flesh were easy to sell but those carrying quite a bit of flesh were a tough sell, and there were many of these fleshy cattle in today's offering. Some tag seen at times as yards are muddy with recent warm weather. A moderate to active market with plenty of buyers and farmers in the seats but the recent volatility in the futures complex has buyers being very cautious in procuring cattle. Cooler weather expected for the end of the week and weekend. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, March 18.
