Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to two weeks ago: best test on steers 950 to 999 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Heifers not well compared this week. Very good demand for today's light offering featuring several strings and loads of backgrounded cattle and a couple consignments of home raised cattle, mostly weaned fall calves. Quality varied, but many average to attractive cattle to choose from. Flesh mostly moderate plus with some fill on the cattle at times. An active market as buyers try to fill pens for summer feeding as the supply of available cattle is sporadic this time of year. CME board closed today for the Juneteenth holiday. Cooler temps for the area this week with chances of rain, some areas had good rains the beginning of the week. Grass and crop conditions are still looking very good.
