Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steer calves 550 to 649 lbs mostly steady and yearling steers 900 to 949 lbs steady. Heifer calves 500 to 549 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher, 600 to 649 lbs mostly steady. Good demand for both yearlings and calves today. Several strings and loads of yearlings, most in moderate plus flesh with some heavy flesh at times. More big, weaned type calves offered than last week with about two thirds of the today's calf offering being weaned, most 60 days or over. The majority of the calves had full preconditioning, those without still see discounts at times. Varied flesh on calves today but more flesh overall than last week. Mild weather continues to make it much easier for calves to gain. An active market seen for this offering. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, December 20, this will be the last feeder cattle sale of 2023.
