Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 900 to 949 lbs steady to 1.00 higher with other weight classes of steers and heifers not well compared today. Today's feature consignment was 1250 head of attractive black hided heifers off grass from one family operation. These heifers, as well as a few packages and loads of steers and heifers from other consignors also off grass, saw very good demand. Moderate to good demand for the reminder of loads and packages in the offering. Most were out of yards and quality varied quite a bit, especially on packages. Flesh ranged from light to some heavy on these cattle. An active market seen for this offering. Hot weather again this week with high humidity. Rain has been spotty. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, August 9.
