Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No feeder cattle sale last week due to Thanksgiving, compared to two weeks ago: steer calves 450 to 600 lbs 6.00 to 7.00 higher, 601 to 700 lbs 10.00 to 12.00 higher, best test on yearling steers 950 to 1000 lbs steady. Heifer calves 400 to 550 lbs 10.00 to 12.00 higher, 551 to 600 lbs mostly steady, best test on yearling heifers 900 to 950 lbs steady with instances up to 6.00 higher. Good to very good demand for both yearlings and calves this week. A couple strings as well as many packages and loads made up the yearling offering. Quality varied, but many plain to average yearlings today. Flesh ranged from moderate to heavy. Many packages and quite a few loads of calves with the majority still coming off the cow. Preconditioning comparable to recent weeks with most calves having full preconditioning or at least a full round of fall shots. Quality on calves mostly average to attractive and less flesh overall than two weeks ago. An active market which got stronger throughout the day, many buyers and farmer feeders in the seats. Special weaned calf sale in Saturday, December 3, expecting 5500, and regular feeder cattle sale Wednesday, December 7.
