Compared to last week: yearling steers and heifers not well compared this week. Best test on steer calves 500 to 600 lbs 5.00 to 7.00 lower, 601 to 650 lbs steady to 1.00 lower. Best test on heifer calves 450 to 500 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 lower, 501 to 600 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 lower with instances up to 15.00 lower on 550 to 600 lbs. Moderate to good demand for yearlings. A light yearling offering today compared to recent weeks with most of the cattle coming out of yards, more flesh condition overall than last week. Quality varied again this week, from plain to attractive. Moderate to good demand for calves today. Quite a few loads and many packages of calves offered. Flesh varied, from light to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times. Preconditioning similar to last week with most calves having full preconditioning. A few weaned packages offered, weaned from 35 days and up. A moderate market for this offering with the incoming winter weather putting pressure on the market, especially the demand for bawling calves. Blizzard conditions expected with varying amounts of accumulated snowfall. Travel expected to be impacted Thursday and Friday. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, November 16.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
