Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 600 to 650 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher, 651 to 850 lbs and 901 to 950 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 2.00 higher on 700 to 750 lbs and 800 to 850 lbs, 851 to 900 lbs steady to 4.00 higher. Heifers 500 to 600 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher, 601 to 650 lbs not well compared, 651 to 850 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for today's offering of many loads and packages of both home raised and backgrounded cattle, Grass type cattle continue to see very good demand. Several loads and packages of bangs vaccinated replacement heifers included today, quite a few of these still go out for feed. The lack of moisture so far has made producers cautious about adding numbers. Quality mostly average to attractive today and flesh ranged from light to some heavy, less flesh overall than seen last week. An active market seen for the offering. The area saw some heavy wet snow last night and this morning, a welcome sight as most places are still in need of moisture. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, April 6.
