Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 700 to 750 lbs mostly steady with an instance 3.00 higher, 751 to 1000 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 lower. Best test on heifers 600 to 650 lbs, 700 to 750 lbs, and 800 to 850 lbs mostly steady. Moderate to good demand for today's large offering with best demand seen for light weight cattle which could go to grass. Today's offering included several strings and many, many loads, both home raised and backgrounded cattle, and many of these were heavier, finishing type cattle. Similar flesh condition and quality to last week, from moderate to heavy and average to attractive. Some cattle carrying tag today as some areas saw rain last week and lot conditions have not dried out yet. A moderate market seen for this offering. Increasing grain prices, especially corn, putting some pressure on today's market. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, 21.
