Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last week: best test on steers 600 to 650 lbs, 700 to 750 lbs, and 850 to 1000 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher with other weight classes of steers not well compared today. Heifers 500 to 600 lbs mostly steady, 601 to 750 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 higher except 650 to 700 lbs not well compared. Good to very good demand for today's offering of packages and loads, including several packages of replacement heifers. Mostly average to attractive quality cattle to choose from today, overall quality slightly more attractive than last week. Flesh mostly light to moderate plus today, many cattle available that would be able to fit into summer grass programs. Some tag showing on the offering today as the area has seen mixed precipitation the last week and very little to no sun to dry things out and lot conditions have become sloppy. An active market seen for today's offering. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, March 24.
