Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 500 to 900 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher with instances up to 9.00 higher on 550 to 600 lbs and 650 to 700 lbs. Heifer calves 500 to 800 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 higher except 700 to 750 lbs not well tested this week for comparison. Good to very good demand for today's large offering of packages and loads. This offering featured many light fleshed, light weight cattle, with quite a few load lots available, and these cattle are met with excellent demand. Less flesh overall today than last week's offering, which featured many finishing type cattle, flesh today mostly light to moderate plus. Quality similar to last week, from average to attractive. An active market with many buyers and some farmer feeders in the seats today. Weather has turned colder this week and the temps are in the more normal range for this time of year. Some of the area received snow over the weekend. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, February 3.
