Compared to last week: steers 700 to 799 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, 800 to 899 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Best test on heifers 600 to 649 lbs mostly steady. A large offering of feeder cattle this week featuring many loads and strings of both home raised and backgrounded cattle and quite a few packages of home raised cattle. Good to very good demand for cattle without too much extra flesh, moderate to good demand for fleshier cattle. Very good demand for replacement heifers. Lots of attractive cattle on offer and a few plainer cattle as producers clean out pens before calving. An active market with mostly order buyers in the seats. Warm weather in the 60's expected for the weekend and then cooler weather to follow, temperatures have been very up and down the last few weeks. No sale next week due to Good Friday, next feeder cattle sale is Friday April 10.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
