Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 700 to 749 lbs 5.00 lower, 750 to 949 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 5.00 higher on 850 to 899 lbs. Best test on heifers 650 to 699 lbs 10.00 lower and 800 to 849 lbs steady. A large offering of feeder cattle today. Many loads, including multiple loads of same weight cattle, and packages of both backgrounded and home raised cattle available and met with good to very good demand. The majority of cattle today were finishing kind of cattle with very few green, grass or backgrounding types on offer. Flesh condition mostly moderate to heavy with quite a few cattle carrying tag. Most cattle were average to attractive in quality with lots of colored cattle available. A mostly active market despite a weak close on the futures complex today and volatility throughout the week. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, March 13.
