Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No sale last week due to Thanksgiving, compared to two weeks ago: best test on steer calves 500 to 549 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 higher, best test on yearling steers 950 to 999 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Best test on heifers calves 500 to 599 lbs 15.00 to 20.00 higher, yearling heifers not well compared. Very good demand for both yearlings and calves today. A large offering of yearling cattle with several long strings and quite a few loads and packages to choose from. Yearling cattle carried some flesh as most have been in yards awhile and weather has been mild, most cattle in moderate plus to heavy flesh. A large offering of calves selling in many packages and a handful of loads. A few weaned packages but the majority of calves were off the cow. Preconditioning varied, from no shots to full preconditioning, less discrimination for calves without all their shots this week, especially those calves which were attractive in quality. Quality varied, but mostly average to attractive. A very active market on both yearlings and calves. There is a great attitude of optimism in the industry right now and plenty of folks eager to own cattle and try to make a profit. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, December 13.
