43rd Anniversary sale today. Compared to last week: yearling steers 850 to 949 lbs 3.00 higher, 1000 to 1049 lbs steady. Best test on yearling heifers 800 to 899 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for a large offering of yearlings. Most of the yearlings sold in strings and loads with just a few packages. Quality varied quite a bit today with quite a few plainer cattle in the mix and also more flesh overall on the cattle. Several long strings still coming off grass and these were very easy to sell. Some fill on the yearling cattle today. Today was the first offering of spring calves and these were met with good to very good demand. All caves were off the cow with varied preconditioning but most calves had at least one full round of shots. Flesh on the calves varied but most calves were in light to moderate flesh, one consignment of calves in moderate plus to heavy flesh. An active market with a full house of buyers and consignors. The area remains very dry and harvest is progressing quickly. Most places experienced a frost this week. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, October 25.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
