Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Sale not reported in recent weeks so an accurate price trend can not be established. Very good demand for today's large offering featuring mostly strings of big, backgrounded cattle. Flesh varied from moderate to some heavy flesh at times. Lots of attractive quality cattle to choose from with plenty of opportunities to fill pens with multiple loads, which buyers did quite often. An active market with buyers determined to fill pens as sales get more sporadic and there are fewer opportunities to get cattle bought. The area saw cooler temperatures this week with rain on and off throughout the week. Some parts of the state and into MN have large amounts of rain and flooding which has limited cattle being sent to these areas. Weather looks warmer and drier for the next week.
