Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 600 to 649 lbs and 700 to 799 lbs mostly steady, 650 to 699 lbs 3.00 lower. Best test on heifers 600 to 649 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, 650 to 699 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Good demand for this week's large offering which featured many packages, loads, and several multiple load lots from the same consignor. More flesh overall than seen last week and more finishing type cattle. Lighter, green cattle which could go to grass continue to see very good demand as guys try finish up grass orders. Some tag on the cattle at times depending on lots conditions as the weather continues to be much warmer than normal for this season. An active market seen for the offering. Futures contracts finished the week on a positive note after down action all week. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, March 8.
