Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 850 to 899 and 950 to 999 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 5.00 higher on 950 to 999 lbs, 900 to 949 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Heifers not well tested last week for comparison. Good demand for another large yearling offering selling in strings and loads. The majority of these cattle were off grass and in light to moderate flesh. A few loads of yard cattle offered, flesh mostly moderate to moderate plus on these cattle. Quality similar to last week. An active market but slightly less enthusiasm than last week to own cattle. Crop and grass conditions still looking good in this area as rains have been timely. Some wheat harvest has started. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, August 25.
