Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to two weeks ago: best test on steers 900 to 999 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifers too lightly tested today for comparison. Very good demand for yearlings today with best demand seen for grass cattle, about 75 percent of this offering came off grass. Just a few packages with most of the offering selling in strings and loads, flesh ranged from light to some heavy. Most cattle were average to attractive quality. An active market with buyers taking all the loads of a weight class when given the opportunity. This was a hot and humid week with some thundershowers mixed in, some areas saw substantial rain. Rain forecasted for the weekend with cooler temps to follow next week. Watch local listings for the next feeder cattle sale.
