Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No sale last week due to Easter, compared to two weeks ago: best test on steers 750 to 799 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, 800 to 849 lbs and 900 to 949 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 higher. Best test on heifers 550 to 599 lbs 2.00 higher with other weight classes of heifers not well compared. Very good demand for today's large offering of many loads, strings, and packages which sold on an active to very active market. Cattle which can fit grass programs are very sought after, grass conditions look great and turn out time is not very far away. Many attractive cattle to choose from in varied flesh condition, mostly light to moderate plus. Many cattle were clean hided despite deteriorating lot conditions this past week as the snow thaws. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, April 21.
