Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last Friday: steer calves 450 to 500 lbs 4.00 lower, 501 to 650 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 500 to 600 lbs mostly steady. Moderate to good demand for calves today depending on quality. Many, many packages and just a handful of loads made up today's calf offering which varied quite a bit in quality, quite a few plain quality calves on offer. A little over half of today's calves were weaned and flesh varied, from light to moderate plus. Some calves, especially those from farther north, have gone through some tough weather while still on the cow which has kept them green. Yearlings compared to Tuesday: best test on steers 850 to1000 lbs steady. Yearling heifers not well compared. Good demand for yearlings which sold in mostly strings and loads. Flesh mostly moderate to moderate plus today. An active market with most of the normal buyers and some farmer feeders attending the sale. A large winter storm is expected at the beginning of next week with the exact timing and severity still to be determined. Quite a few cattle came to the auction today in case the weather does not cooperate next week. Watch local listings to see if next Friday's(December 16) feeder cattle sale will still be happening.
